In a world obsessed with material worth, this project reimagines value through the most universal tools - imagination and play. The work pays homage to the uncelebrated design heroes and informal makers across South Africa who have long pioneered circular thinking as a critical and creative design tool.
Limiting ourselves to a R100 budget and materials salvaged from our local dump, ‘R100 for Everything’ explores a single HAY ‘AAC 222’ chair as different play objects: a swing, a seesaw, a go-kart, a slide, a noughts + crosses board, and a toy push car.
Collectively the work defies the sterile perfection of showroom design and promotes an attitude towards materials that prioritises imagination as the driver of innovation. Brought to life through a series of imagined realities captured in collaboration with Sune Van Tonder, the industrial neighborhood of our Cape Town studio becomes the backdrop for a new playground of possibilities. As abandoned plots and empty bus stops are transformed into locations of wonder and joy, ‘play’ emerges as the most powerful generator of value of them all!
