Levana Primary School Boundary Wall
Project type
Education, Social Impact Architecture
Date
Jun-Dec 2024
Location
Lavender Hill, Cape Town, South Africa
Description
Lavender Hill is the most infamous suburb in Cape Town, known for its extreme gang and gun violence.
Levana Primary School unfortunately borders two rival gangs, and the school field was used as an open shooting ground for years.
Many government and private interventions, as well as design competitions, took place, with the final result being a block wall around the perimeter to protect the staff and children.
On paper, this project is a 300-meter-long, 3.5-meter-high block wall. However, what this built outcome allows is so much more. Children are now safe at school, staff can focus on teaching without needing to work additional 'watch' shifts, and the school saves money that was previously spent on employing four different security services, including constant police watch.
All neighboring dwellings consist of informal 'shack' housing. These homes also benefit from the presence of a solid structure to build up against, and residents experience a much higher level of security and safety, being shielded from gang violence.
A small project with a much bigger impact.
