Dryden St Library

Project type

Education, Social Impact Architecture

Date

Jan 2025

Location

Cape Town, South Africa

Description

The proposed library addition to Dryden Street Primary School in Cape Town, initiated by the Otto Foundation in collaboration with The MAAK Architects, aims to address the urgent need for accessible, well-resourced educational facilities in South Africa, where fewer than 8% of public schools have a functioning library. As a commuter school, Dryden Street Primary serves many learners who travel significant distances daily, often arriving early or waiting late after school. The new library will not only provide a vibrant, literacy-rich environment but also serve as a safe and secure space for students during these transitional hours—supporting both their academic growth and wellbeing in a nurturing, community-centered setting.

The MAAK, a people- and process-based architectural practice, has embedded student engagement at the heart of the design process, ensuring that the voices, needs, and imaginations of the children inform and inspire the development of this much-needed educational facility.
